ProjectRivers - Portugal

Laboratório Nacional de Enggenharia Civil (LNEC) - Nuno Charneca

The project aims to promote the active social participation of individuals and organizations concerning protection and conservation of rivers. It intends to promote scientific curiosity and implement an experimental scientific method through the collection of physical, chemical and biological data.

The project is implemented by 2 NGOs which involve the adoption of 500m river segments that can be characterized using the myObservatory application, both in the field and in the office.

The participation is all about empowering communities to take action and take local "ownership" of river stretches using crowndsourcing as a change of paradigm on data creation. The project enables the adoption of river stretches by:

  • Schools (from 1st circle to University)
  • Municipalities
  • Scout groups
  • NGOs
  • Private and Public Companies
  • Associations (cultural, farmers, others)
  • Free-time activities
  • 3rd age homes
  • Fisherman & Hunters Groups
  • Groups of friends
  • Families
